Wednesday Morning

I sucked up my courage, tucked away my pride, and met with Pietr first thing in the morning. Okay, technically, he met with me in my room after I summoned him.

Today, he was back in his light tan leggings and tunic, a color that showed off the lines of his muscular legs and the dark brown skin of his biceps. He stood across from me with his arms crossed, his expression a perfect mask hiding whatever feelings he had deep inside. The only part of him shifting was the color of his eyes.

“Listen,” I said and took a deep breath, “I know my behavior last night was less than ideal, but I’ve come to terms with my role here. I’ll help.”

Pietr uncrossed his arms, and his gaze softened. “Thank you. The people of Mirfeniksa deserve better, far better than Galina. Being a leader may be a new and foreign idea for you, but we believe in you. I believe in you.”

“You believe in a thief?” I asked, smiling.

The corner of his mouth twitched. “You’ve proven to be far more than that. Besides, you’re an ex-thief, right?”

“You do realize that you’ll actually be the one leading, right?” I asked, ignoring the tingles spreading in my belly. There was only one man my heart wanted, my body’s reaction be damned. “I’ll just be the face of it all.”

“Flattery only gets you so far.” Even if my heart performed a little pitter-patter. Working with him was going to be tough.

He chuckled. “Well, I’m glad you’re staying because I have a feeling that you’re going to like what comes next.”

“Which is what?” I asked eagerly. I was such a sucker for surprises.

“Come with me.” He nodded his head toward the door. “I’m willing to bet your parents never taught you how to speak long distance with other phoenixes, without human technology.”

As we walked, my pulse raced faster with the suggestion behind his words. “That would be a correct assumption.”

“No big surprise, but we can use fire to communicate.” He opened his hand toward the war room.

I stepped inside. Everyone else was already gathered and looked up at me with a mixture of relief and humor.

Reaching across the table, Lena held out a hand to Pavel. “Pay up.”

He grumbled and produced some coins, which he placed in her palm.

I glared up at Pietr. “You knew I would change my mind?”

He smiled. “I had hope. But now that we’re all here, let’s get down to business.”

Narrowing my eyes at Pavel for betting against me, I took my now standard seat between Lena and Ivan, who sat at the table’s far end. Liz and Pavel sat across from me, and Oleg stood by the door.

Pietr remained standing, placing his hands on the back of his chair at the head of the table. He looked around the room, meeting each of our gazes in turn.

“This is it,” he said at last. “The moment we’ve been waiting for. The rightful
